Tripler Army Medical Center is looking for a Biomedical Technologist to provide scientific laboratory services and support for researchers and graduate medical education
residents for the Department of Clinical Investigation, Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC), Honolulu, Hawaii.

Salary: $49000

Responsibilities

5.3.1. General Technical Support Services – Contract Personnel shall: Consult with PI on specimen collection, data
quality control, the interpretation of data, manuscript preparation, advising on data analysis and equipment,
production and submission of required reports, and completion of scholarly manuscript for publication after
appropriate scientific, Operation Security, and Public Affairs reviews are obtained and approved.
5.3.2. Clinical Trial Support Objectives:
5.3.2.1. To provide specimen collection and processing for clinical studies which evaluate new drugs and
treatments or evaluate course of disease progression
5.3.2.2. To provide laboratory analyses for clinical studies which evaluate devices that improve readiness and
military operational medicine
5.3.2.3. Clinical Trial Support Services – Contract Personnel shall:
5.3.2.3.1. Collect clinical specimens and maintain patient confidentiality as written in protocol
5.3.2.3.2.Process specimens as per specific assay requirements according to protocol
5.3.2.3.3. Store and keep track of specimens in catalogue freezer space until specimens ready for shipment to central
laboratories for multisite studies
5.3.2.3.4. Summarize data in databases and prepare summary reports
5.3.3. Translational Physiology Support Objectives:
5.3.3.1. To develop and characterize models for promotion of Defense Health Readiness
5.3.3.2. To provide laboratory analyses for studies which address military priorities such as combat casualty
care, wound healing, and transport medicine
5.3.3.3. To investigate therapeutic efficacy of novel molecular or cellular treatments that improve learning
5.3.3.4. Translational Physiology Study Services – Contract Personnel shall:

5.3.3.4.1. Provide input to laboratory and animal procedures, behavioral analysis, tissue harvesting and histological
analysis, molecular and immunological assays, cell culture, and data analysis
5.3.3.4.2. Provide Combat Casualty Post-field Care studies: perform in vitro and in vivo testing of treatment
strategy plans to control fluid and electrolyte balance; evaluate effects that mimic prolonged field care and transport
medicine; and perform laboratory assays for biomarkers of ischemia and inflammation and hormonal regulation
5.3.3.4.3. Provide Wound Tissue Healing studies: evaluate biomarkers associated with acute lung injury; resistant
wound healing in infected wounds, and stem cell effectiveness in reducing inflammatory injury and promoting tissue
repair
5.3.3.4.4 Provide Gulf War Illness studies: evaluate experimental therapies for the treatment of Gulf War Illness by
performing in vitro assays and in vivo testing in rodent models, to include development of an exosome-mediated
drug delivery system, behavioral testing, and evaluating of possible toxic effects on cardiac and renal function
5.3.4. Microbiology Study Objectives:
5.3.4.1. To demonstrate the ability to identify molecular and protein biomarkers that detect distinct signatures of
emerging infectious diseases
5.3.4.2. To characterize new methods for detecting and tracking antimicrobial resistance patterns
5.3.4.3. To identify more rapid diagnostic technologies to prescribe correct antibiotics for infected patients.
5.3.4.4. To provide infectious disease surveillance in the Pacific Region
5.3.4.5. Microbiology Study Support Services – Contract Personnel shall:
5.3.4.5.1. Collect and process clinical specimens and maintain patient confidentiality working with de-identified
specimens
5.3.4.5.2. Analyze bacteria and virus infected specimens with different molecular assays and protein biomarker
assays to compare
5.3.4.5.3. Evaluate unique DNA signatures and prevalence of antimicrobial resistant in clinical specimens
5.3.4.5.4. Contribute specimens and data to biobanks and analyze results for disease surveillance programs
5.3.5. General Task Parameters:
5.3.5.1. The Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall provide input to, but not
independently execute, in vivo and in vitro experiments to fulfill requirements of grant and electrolyte balance
testing done for Command approved Tripler Army Medical Center investigative studies for a variety of projects
supported by the Department of Clinical Investigation.
5.3.5.2. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall meet with the senior
Department of Clinical Investigation Lab Manager weekly to review assay laboratory and experiment results and
data entry.
5.3.5.3. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall provide input (but
not independently execute) to experiments and other physiological, pharmacological assays, human specimen
collection and data collection and analyses to assure the meeting of research grant objectives and deadlines.
5.3.5.4. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall gather data and
provide input to (but not independently execute) clinical investigation study protocols including collection and
preparation of specimens and maintain patient confidentiality as written in protocol.
5.3.4.5. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall administer drug
doses to research animals as specified in research protocols.
5.3.4.6. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall provide data as
specified in study protocols that may require testing of devices or executing biomedical assays to include ELISAs,
spectrophotometric assays, Western blots, Southern blots, PCR, HPLC, RNA/DNA extractions,
radioimmunoassay, receptor quantitation with receptor binding assessments and/or quantification of mRNA with
RT-PCR.
5.3.4.7. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall prepare and verify
quality control reagents used in a variety of biomedical assays to include ELISAs, spectrophotometric assays,
Western blots, Southern blots, PCR, HPLC, RNA/DNA extractions, radioimmunoassay.
5.3.4.8. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall prepare data
summaries and research progress reports as well as preparation of data presentations and manuscript preparation.
5.3.4.9. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall update standard
operating procedures as needed to keep laboratory procedures current and at the forefront of technology.
5.3.4.10. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall enroll study
participants and extract chart review data or administration of surveys.
5.3.4.11. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall rack and maintain
equipment and supplies for specific studies.
5.3.4.12. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall (a) comply with
applicable Tripler Army Medical Center written policies, procedures, and Army Regulations, (b) comply with
applicable JCAHO standards, (c) and comply with installation rules and regulations concerning fire, safety,
sanitation, security and possession of firearms and other lethal weapons.
5.3.4.13. Both the Biomedical Investigative Assistant and the Biomedical Technologist shall attend training,
meetings, and conferences as required by the Department of Clinical Investigation.
5.4. Requirements for all positions.
5.4.1. The Contractor shall ensure that all contract personnel providing services under this contract shall be able to
read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all parties and other health care
providers. In addition, if the position requires the use of computers, the contract personnel shall be computer
literate.
5.4.2. The contract personnel shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity
such that he/she can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.
5.4.3 The contract personnel shall have the required education, training, experience and documented current
competence in the required specialty position description.


Qualifications

5.2.3.1.2 Biomedical Technologist must have a Master’s degree in basic biomedical research field (to include,
but not limited to biology, chemistry, zoology, microbiology) OR a minimum of 10 years demonstrated
experience in laboratory research.
5.2.3.2. Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required.
Experience:
5.2.3.3.1 : A minimum of 10 years demonstrated experience in laboratory research. Demonstrate research
experience in complex biomedical studies including for example, animal model surgical experience, molecular
biology DNA analyses, physiological monitoring, radioimmunoassay, biochemical assessments, hormone
measurements, human specimen processing, and data analysis for presentation in scientific forums.
5.2.3.4. Knowledge and experience in developing and conducting complex biomedical research in the areas of
physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, or biochemistry.

5.2.3.5. Understanding of methodology and design for research.
5.2.3.5.1. Knowledge and experience in human studies, animal studies, dose-response assays, ELISAs, and
molecular methods.
5.2.3.5.2. Knowledge and experience with performing data analyses and preparing figures and reports for
national scientific presentations and grant reports.
5.2.3.5.3. Experience with setting up data spreadsheets for collaborative research partners to access jointly and
maintaining laboratory records in accordance with accreditation standards.
5.2.3.6. Biomedical Technologist shall possess broad knowledge of computers and related software to include word
processing, spreadsheet, data base management, statistical applications, and intranet and Internet connections and
applications
