Overview

The Medical Lab Scientist provides comprehensive laboratory testing and diagnostic support services within a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) in Yokota, Japan. The individual performs a wide range of laboratory procedures in support of patient diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention while ensuring compliance with Defense Health Agency (DHA), Department of Defense (DoD), and facility-specific standards. This role supports operational readiness and quality patient care for military members, dependents, and authorized beneficiaries in an overseas healthcare environment.

 

*Position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing in areas such as hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, coagulation, urinalysis, and blood banking.
  • Analyze, interpret, and verify laboratory test results while maintaining accuracy and quality standards.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Follow established quality control and quality assurance procedures in accordance with DHA and laboratory regulations.
  • Collect, process, and prepare specimens for testing and ensure proper specimen handling procedures are followed.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation, records, and reports in compliance with applicable regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, safety, blood borne pathogen, and universal precaution protocols.
  • Support laboratory readiness initiatives and assist with inventory management and supply accountability.
  • Utilize electronic medical records and laboratory information systems to document patient information and test results.
  • Participate in required orientation, training, competency assessments, and continuing education activities.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding laboratory findings and patient care support.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable privacy regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) through ASCP or equivalent nationally recognized certifying agency.
  • Minimum of one year of recent clinical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Current, valid, unrestricted license or certification if required by the applicable state or regulatory authority.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control, quality assurance, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and computerized laboratory systems.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet all Government health, immunization, security clearance, and installation access requirements.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules as required.
