Overview

The Clinical or Counseling Psychologist serves as a Center Mental Health Consultant (CMHC) providing comprehensive mental health services to students at the Hawaii Job Corps Center. This role emphasizes assessment, crisis intervention, short-term therapy, and program development to support student well-being and employability.

  • Site Location: Hawaii Job Corps Center (Hawaii)
  • Work Schedule:
    • Minimum 21 hours/week up to 42.2 hours/week
    • Schedule set based on operational needs
    • Flexible arrangements possible during emergencies
  • Employment Type: Independent Contractor
  • Population Served: Adolescents and young adults in a residential training program

The Psychologist plays a key role in ensuring mental health services align with Job Corps regulations and support student success outcomes.

 

*Position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment

  • Conduct psychological and behavioral evaluations for:
    • Applicants during admissions
    • New students (based on intake screenings)
    • Referred or self-referred students
  • Participate in FRT and DAC committees
  • Provide clinical recommendations regarding:
    • Admission suitability
    • Mental health stability
    • Accommodation needs

Diagnosis & Case Management

  • Develop comprehensive case management plans
  • Provide diagnostic input (including for medical separation when necessary)
  • Monitor student progress and adjust treatment strategies
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure coordinated care delivery

Therapeutic Services

  • Deliver short-term, solution-focused counseling
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency response
  • Conduct or coordinate psychological testing when needed
  • Refer to psychiatric or specialty services when appropriate

Consultation & Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
    • Center Physician (for medication management)
    • TEAP Specialist (substance use cases)
    • Counseling and residential staff
  • Lead or support psychoeducational groups (e.g., anger management, coping skills)
  • Participate in weekly case conferences

Program Development & Training

  • Provide staff training on:
    • Adolescent development
    • Mental health awareness
  • Support development of center-wide mental health initiatives
  • Advise leadership on mental health program improvements

Mental Health Promotion

  • Deliver student education sessions on:
    • Mental health awareness
    • Crisis response
    • Coping strategies
  • Participate in annual mental health campaigns and prevention programs

Qualifications

  • Education: Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in Psychology
  • Licensure: Active, unrestricted Psychologist license in the state of Hawaii
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 1 year of independent clinical practice
    • Experience with adolescents/young adults
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Background in residential, educational, military, or correctional settings
    • Experience with underserved populations
  • Other Requirements:
    • Independent practice capability
    • Background investigation clearance
    • Professional liability insurance
    • Strong clinical, diagnostic, and consultation skills
