Overview

Location: OB/GYN Clinic - Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA

 

Hours of Performance: Services shall be provided Saturday through Sunday, between the hours of 0600 and 2000 hours. Shifts will normally be scheduled anywhere from an eight and half (8.5) to twelve (12) hour period, to include an uncompensated thirty (30) minutes to sixty (60) minute lunch break, respectively. In no instance will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of ninety (90) hours per two-week period. Services will be required for more than 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the results of the health care plan, modify the health care plan as needed, and implement and participate in follow-up.
  • Participate in meetings to review and evaluate the care provided to patients, identify opportunities to improve the care delivered, and recommend corrective action when problems exist. Should a meeting occur outside of the HCW’s regular working hours, the HCW shall be required to read and initial the minutes of the meeting.
  • Participate in the provision of monthly in-service training to non-health care practitioner members of the clinical and administrative staff on subjects germane to the HCW’s specialty.
  • Provide for an optimum physical environment for patients and staff, emphasizing good safety practices and cleanliness. Support preventive maintenance and report equipment failures and inadequacies.
  • Promote economic utilization of equipment, supplies and be cost conscious when ordering lab and radiological studies. Know the location and operation of emergency equipment.
  • Adhere to departmental and hospital safety guidelines.

Assessment and management of health care of women throughout the life cycle inclusive of:

  • Health, psychosocial, OB/GYN history and physical examination
  • Prenatal care of the uncomplicated obstetric patient.
  • Consultation with other specialists, clinics or health resources as indicated.
  • Ordering of routine screening laboratory tests and radiographic procedures.
  • Prescription of contraceptive agents excluding subcutaneous implanted progestin devices and cervical caps.
  • Assessment and treatment of patients with acute episodic illness and consultation with appropriate medical officer when needed.
  • Development of health promotion and maintenance plans, including disease prevention, health education and counseling.
  • Provision of periodic health screening.
  • Assessment and treatment of patients with minor gynecological problems and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Treatment of male partners of OB/GYN patients treated for sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Obtain patient health and developmental history.
  • Perform and record a health appraisal including physical assessment and evaluation.
  • Differentiate between normal findings and those that require consultation and/or referral.
  • Request x-rays and laboratory tests as deemed necessary.
  • Equipment and material management.

Qualifications

Degree/Education: Master's degree in nursing. Graduate from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

 

Certications: Possess certification as an OB/GYN NP or Women's Health Care NP by the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (NCC)

 

Additional Requirments: Provide three (3) letters of recommendation from practicing physicians. At least one (1) of the letters must attest to the HCW’s clinical skills, productivity, knowledge base, and rapport with co-workers and supervisors. The other letters may be from other physicians. Reference letters must include name, title, phone number date of reference, address, and signature of the individual providing reference. Reference letters must have been written within the preceding three (3) years.
