Overview

Location: Keesler AFB - 81st Medical Group

 

Position Title: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (Ultrasound Tech)

 

Schedule:Regular duty hours will be between 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. flexible schedules, Monday through Friday, working 9-hour workdays with a 1-hour non billable lunch break. Regular work hours are scheduled by the Government Supervisor to correspond to the needs of the department, not to exceed 80 hours per two-week period.

 

On-Call: the on-call hours begin at 1700 (5:00 p.m.) and proceed until 0700 (7:00 a.m.) the following day. Weekend on-call begins Saturday morning and ends at 0700 (7:00 a.m.) the following Monday, not to exceed fourteen (14) days per month or 168 days per year. The response time for all call-out services shall be within 60 minutes of initial contact from the MTF. Following completion of the requested study, Contractor personnel shall ensure that results are forwarded to the ordering physician for interpretation.

 

Pay: Between $50/hr - $60/hr + Health & Wellness $4.57*/hr worked (in lieu of benefits)

 

On-Call Rate: $6/hr

Responsibilities

  • Observe standard techniques in carrying out ultrasound procedures and ensure that work performed is of the highest quality, in accomplishing day-to-day work.
  • Provide and perform highly specialized complex ultrasound services and answer questions regarding work.
  • Prepare and submit required documentation pertinent to all examinations. Compliance with Diagnostic Imaging Flight instructions 44-8 dated 15 November 2014 is mandatory.
  • Perform numerous complex sonographic scans on all anatomical areas for in-utero, neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, which includes the use of fixed and portable scanners.
  • Assist Radiologist and /or other physicians in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as biopsies, aspirations, and intraoperative localization of lesions, or other similar procedures.
  • Advise on any problems, anomalies, or conditions found during or, as a result, of the examination or procedure.
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, position the patient, and produce the diagnostic images necessary for the examination interpretation.
  • Independently differentiate between the use of transducers for each examination to ensure maximum diagnostic quality of images and examinations.
  • Confer with the Radiologist and or other physicians to establish requirements of nonstandard examinations and determine the technical factors: positioning, quantity, and depth of scans to satisfy requirements.
  • Inform the Radiologist on results of examinations and provide them with a preliminary diagnostic evaluation. Notify the Radiologist and or other physician of significant abnormalities requiring the immediate attention and visualization while patient is undergoing examination. Inform the radiologist and or other physician of any aspects of the examination not evident from the sonograms, which might have bearing on diagnosis or treatment of patient (e.g., patient’s reaction to temperature, pressure, or movement of transducer; patient’s ability to respond to instructions; limitations in patient’s movement; etc.).
  • Perform preventive maintenance on ultrasound machines on a weekly basis. Follow infection control guidelines for the care of ultrasound transducers.
  • Identify machine malfunction beyond the operator’s capability of resolving and report malfunction to the section Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC).
  • Use the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for identifying, archiving, reviewing, and retrieving filmless ultrasound examinations.
  • Establish and maintain a variety of files and records relating to ultrasound examinations.
  • Assist with any administrative functions, which aid in the completion of patient exam and other sonographic studies associated with the training facility.
  • Be productive and perform other related administrative duties under the direction of the NCOIC.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift. Ensure preventative maintenance and routine cleanings are performed as directed.
  • Comply with the MTF and Air Force (AF) safety guidelines.
  • Maintain professional manner, display a positive/cooperative attitude, ensure a safe work environment, and employ safe work habits.
  • The Flight Commander/Medical Director will make specific duties/patient care assignments when necessary.
  • Shall be productive and perform with minimal supervisory direction.
  • Shall be in the work area and available for work at the appointed times.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift and ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
  • Complete all job specific data training as required by the MTF.
  • Complete all in process and out-processing within MTF requirements (e.g., badges, e-mail accounts, Privacy Act, etc.).
  • All patient charting is included as a part of the patient visit and must be completed within department standards. There is an adequate amount of administrative time scheduled for each Contractor personnel, with the expectation that patient charting be completed during the normal duty day.
  • Experienced contractor personnel may be asked by the Medical Director of the clinic to serve in an advisory/second opinion role to less experienced technologists and ultrasound Phase II students. The contractor personnel and the Medical Director will agree upon, this, prior to assuming this role. To accommodate the extra time required to fulfill this role, the patient load will be decreased to levels equitable to active duty fulfilling the same role.
  • Shall be expected to manage examination times according to the guidelines set forth in the ultrasound department and per the template currently in place.
  • Expected to follow guidelines and procedures set by the Radiology Medical Director.

Qualifications

Degree/Education: Contractor personnel shall possess a certificate of formal training from an accredited ultrasound school/training program, as well as be registered in a subspecialty such as abdominal, OB/GYN, Breast, or Vascular, by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Contractor personnel must provide documentation of degree or technical training completion prior to providing services at the 81 MDG.

 

Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: See Exhibit 2

 

Experience: Contractor personnel must have a minimum of 36 months experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer within the previous 48 months.

 

Board Certification: Contractor personnel shall maintain an active status with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as well as be registered in a subspecialty such as abdominal, OB/GYN, Breast, or Vascular, by maintaining 30 hours of CHE in a three (3) year period. Contractor personnel must provide proof of board certification prior to providing services to the 81 MDG and maintain their certification through their employment.

CONTINUING HEALTH EDUCATION (CHE)/ CERTIFIED EDUCATION UNIT (CEU) REQUIREMENTS. Contractor personnel registered or certified by national/ Medical associations shall continue to meet the minimum standards for CHE to remain current.
