Location: Keesler AFB, MS

 

Specialty: Ambulatory Surgical Unit - Personnel may be assigned to either the Pre-Admissions Clinic, Same-Day Surgical Unit, or Post-Anesthesia Care Unit based on department needs.

 

Schedule: shall work a 9-hour shift between the hours of 0600-2000 (6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.). Each shift includes an uncompensated one-hour lunch break. Shifts will rotate based on department needs. Example shifts are, but not limited to: 0600-1500 (6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), 0700-1600 (7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), 0800-1700 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), and 1100-2000 (11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.).

 

Pay: Up to $36/hr + H&W $4.41/hr*

Responsibilities

Duties

  • Assess, plan, and evaluate nursing care for a wide variety of patients, to include children, adolescents, adults, elderly and disabled, to include visually and hearing impaired; and individuals of varying ethnic and religious background, to include those who do not speak or understand English.
  • Possess knowledge of medical-surgical medication usage and administration, to include a variety of pharmacological agents used in treatment of pre- and postsurgical patients, the desired effects, side effects, complications and usual dosage of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Administer medication safety and provide proper documentation of patient condition, disease progress, patient teaching and follow-up care.
  • Recognize medical emergencies and react with alertness and skill in any emergency situation, (e.g., cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, shock, post-surgical complications and psychiatric reaction). Be able to initiate life saving measures in the absence of a physician. Initiate Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), if required. Assist medical team in administering advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and pediatric advanced life support (PALS) measures, when necessary.
  • Perform Charge Nurse duties when designated by Element Leader/Flight Commander.
  • All patient charting is included as part of the patient visit and must be completed within department standards. There is an adequate amount of administrative time scheduled for each Contractor personnel, with the expectation that patient charting be completed during the normal duty day.
  • Maintain accurate and current notes in both the patient hard copy chart records and electronic inpatient medical records of all patients seen, as appropriate, and produces reports of evaluation and/or treatment, as required.
  • Adhere to and maintain a system of supply inventory management with unit supply custodian to ensure adequate stock levels of consumable supplies are available within the work center and clinical laboratory to minimize waste and ensure uninterrupted services.
  • Practice general hospital safety, infection control, aseptic and sterile techniques for safe handling of sharps, electrical equipment, and blood or blood products, to include cleaning of work areas and equipment.
  • Ensure a safe work environment and safe work habits.
  • Establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers, peers, families and other healthcare team members.
  • Possess/maintain proper certification and skills to perform required duties within regulatory compliance and with minimal oversight.
  • Obtain patient history, pertinent family history, and document in patient medical record.
  • Properly apply cardiac leads and utilize 12 lead EKG machine, analyze rhythm strips and notify Physician of any abnormal results (e.g., dysrhythmias for patient situation). Be able to interpret cardiac rhythms and intervene on emergent changes.
  • Perform post-operative recovery and discharge within established criteria, IAW department protocols.
  • Assesses patients. Uses the nursing process as a basis for professional practice. Demonstrates proper preparation of patients for treatments and procedures, to include surgical interventions. Provides proper care and evaluation of postprocedural patients.
  • Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.
  • Skilled in setting up, operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment including, but not limited to IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.
  • Performs a full range of nursing procedures such as: dressing changes, catheterization, wound irrigation, intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion, oxygen administration, vital signs, specimen collection and other unit specific procedures as prescribed by the provider.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Degree/Education: Associates Degree of Nursing
  • Certifications: Shall possess and provide proof of, and maintain certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). 
  • Experience: Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a clinical nurse in an inpatient care setting in the last 5 years, PACU, ICU and/or emergency room preferred.
  • Licensure/Registration:  Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
